1. Dominion (Rio Grande Games)

This fast-moving card game for 2-4 players is perfect for strategy game lovers. With multiple avenues to victory and hundreds of possibly combinations of cards, Dominion is a different game each time you play.

2. Carcassonne (Rio Grande Games)

Fast and fun—this 2-5 player game is perfect if you don’t have a lot of time to set up and explain complicated systems of play. The rules are simple, but the strategies can be rich (and rewarding). Winner of the 2001 Spiel des Jahres (German Game of the Year Award).

3. Ticket to Ride (Days of Wonder)

This fast-moving strategy game keeps everyone involved with multiple levels of strategy and quick turns, and it's impossible to tell who has won until the game is over and the points are tallied. Often, there is a surprise victor! Winner of the 2004 Spiel des Jahres (German Game of the Year Award). 2-6 players, excellent for younger kids as well.

4. Power Grid (Rio Grande Games)

This 2-6 player game might be a little intimidating for newbie strategists, but seasoned gamers will find the wealth of strategies and complex game dynamics richly rewarding. Be sure to set aside a few hours to play.

5. Alhambra (Queen Games)

This 2003 winner of the Spiel des Jahres (Game of the Year Award) is an excellent way to spend an hour. With multiple strategies for the best way to build your city, Alhambra has great replay value. 2-6 players.

6. Puerto Rico (Rio Grande Games)

This 2-5 player game has multiple ways to win. Each player’s actions affect everyone else, making gameplay feel fresh over and over. Puerto Rico’s long turns and complicated levels of strategy might discourage some gamers, but if you love long and complicated styles of play and you’re looking for a challenge, this board game delivers beautifully.

Catan is definitely my favorite game in the whole world, so this list is very interesting to me. The only games I've had the privilege of playing on this list are Carcassonne and Ticket to Ride, which I enjoyed greatly. I will have to give some of these other games a try, as I am always looking for more games to enjoy.
