Planning on dressing up in a movie star costume this year? Want to look like a fabulous movie star without paying tons of money for a cheap, one-size-fits-barely-anybody costume from the store? Want to look glamorous for a costume party without spending a fortune on a flimsy costume you won't wear again?

Don't worry. Making a costume yourself is rewarding and fun--and it can be cheaper than buying the full costume, too.

It’s easy to make your own getup purely out of things in your closet, or if you'd rather do some shopping, from inexpensive stuff online or a thrift/consignment store.

Follow these easy steps, and you'll be shining like a star at your next costume party!

In order to make a movie star costume, you’ll need:

  • A long, silky dress
  • Dangly chandelier earrings
  • Large, retro sunglasses
  • High heels
  • A clutch purse
  • Wig (optional)
  • Gloves (optional)

A Long, Silky Dress

Just about any silky or glittery prom dress, bridesmaid dress, or cocktail dress will work fine. You may already have something in your closet, or you may be able to find the perfect gown online or at a local thrift store or consignment shop. Be sure the dress looks extra glamorous and sleek.

Dangly Chandelier Earrings

Glittery, dangly chandelier earrings are a great way to glam up your costume. You can find costume jewelry in most stores.

Large, Retro Sunglasses

Dim the flashes from the paparazzi with large, dark sunglasses. You may already have these lying around your house. If you don't have a retro-looking pair, you can find a pair easily at the thrift store or online.

High Heels

Slip into a pair of strappy high heels to amp up the glam factor. You probably already have something in your closet that will work, and if not, you can check your local thrift or consignment shop for deals.

A Clutch Purse

Find a sparkly clutch purse that matches your outfit and amps up your movie star look. You may already have one or two of these left over from prom.

Wig (optional)

If you want to mimic a real-life star whose hair is wildly different from your own, find a wig that matches her hair and style. Or, sweep your own hair up into a fabulous updo, bun, or chiffon and spray to hold in place. You'll look sleek and glamorous.

Gloves (optional)

To look extra formal and dressed up, pull on a pair of elbow-length silk gloves.

Put everything together and admire your reflection. Congratulations! You have a super easy movie star costume and you’re ready to shine.

TIP: For a great couples’ costume idea, have your date or friend dress as a member of the paparazzi by wearing dark clothes, carrying camera equipment, and hanging a big camera around his/her neck.
